Not gonna hammer Westwood too hard as I have made it clear multiple times my thoughts and ideas but You and I know mine dont count.
Westwood girls made it to the playoffs and seemed out of sync all year. Had multiple defections to Mitchell County and a lot was asked for last years bench players to assume starter roles. Beat teams we should have in Baker, Echols and Grace. Lost to plenty others. Graduate 5 seniors (all starters). Next year is up in the air as there are only 3 returning players and 3 upcoming 9th graders.
Westwood boys missed the playoffs. Only 2 seniors graduate. Will be very guard heavy. Post play will need some work. All the players need to have great summer workouts in the weight room.
Westwood Coaching. Fries got here and had to look over 5 teams and assess what they all had. Son did most of the JV but Dad was very involved too. B-team boys had numbers but was made up mostly of the varsity bench. Varsity boys and girls had to share practice time and that caused logistics issues. Fries will be able to claim next year teams as his own and 18 months to implement his program.
Bucks Outlook:
Girls: will finish 4th in region again and miss the playoffs.
Boys: will finish 4th in the region and miss the playoffs
Coach: Without another coach, Fries will be in charge of all 5 teams again.

The coaching staff at Westwood is one of the best in AA which includes coach ford, fries, and birdsong. Just got to have the kids for these veteran coaches to work with

blue9, ww has improved themselves with fries and birdsong - they are proven and can win at any level given time. football is a different story & i disagree with u about ford, he is an avg coordinator and ww could do better - my ? is does it matter. are ww and football almost done? a once proud program treading water with little sight of land.

say what you want fan, Ford has more GISA titles than any former or current coaches. 10+. Blue, westwood doesnt always have the personnel due to school policies that make it hard to get in or hard to stay. Staying has been an issue for 10 years. What could have been if all those athletes would have not gone to pelham or baconton

IMO Ford is great for WW he has stayed the course thru up and down years. My question for fan is who in the world do you think you can get that would be an improvement over Ford? My advice is to be careful what you wish for.

If my math is correct, coach ford has been walking the halls at Westwood for 30 years next year

Isn't that what Fries wanted, and what the WW board agreed to give him? Surely he had a plan in place to address how he will tackle such a large task.

full, i think coach fries has done a fine job as AD and head girls/boys basketball coach. he has been a quality hire replacing the excellent AD & HC g gruhl. the issue for me is time - our girls program needs an individual that can commit hours upon hours to their development. with all coach fries does this is too tall a task, as it would be for anyone. as for did he want this? i think it was more that is how it was handed to him and as he only got to fuller street at the end of June, not enough time to look for quality help.

blue9, 30 years is a lot and i sure dont want my comments to sound like i dont appreciate and respect what he has and is doing. i am just not convinced he is the one to lead the cats out of 8man into a more competitive 11 man division in the coming years as the admin has verbally expressed - just my opinion and i can attest to being wrong on many things before

Just curious. What happen to the assitant coaches, middle school and Jr. Pro coaches, from a year ago? Did they all need to be replaced or did any return this year? Did Harris and Gruhl do it all for their programs?

jr pro/travel/5th&6th has typically been a volunteer/parent or two. while this is sometimes ok it is rarely ideal. it was at its best when coaches smith were in charge of the girls program and spent saturdays and pe time developing the younger female athletes. since her retirement this has not been a priority and the lack of development is obvious. ms/jv coaches have been a mixture of volunteer/parent or school coach but again without consistent direction from the varsity HC the younger players have not gotten the attention they need. this lack of focus, direction, attention, concern rests squarely on the shoulders of the admin & board - it must change. if you going to have a varsity program you have to do everything to give your student/athletes a chance to be their best selves.

i think the admin & board would say, we have a small teacher/staff and academics is the most important thing. finding a teacher/staff that can be both academically & athletically gifted and convince them to move to camilla is a difficult task so they put there energy into the academic focus as it came to hiring teachers/staff

It is what he wanted but it is time to revisit that agreement. Old saying is if it aint broke dont fix it.....Its broken so WW needs to fix it.
