After watching and studying both teams during the season I wonder who is still shooting the ball even though the season is over. My guess is one maybe two. This is the problem with teams especially in Damascus. Basketball season never ends,if you want to win more games and improve. Everybody likes to point fingers at the coaches, but it’s what the kids do in the off-season to determine the season they will have. I can’t express it enough but it’s up to them because nobody can make them do it and expect to see good results.

in basketball you can never do enough shooting and dribbling. if you are only practicing these things in practice during the season, your season is already over

More power to the kids who go the extra mile and work on their game in the off season. At times you may not think it will work out but keep grinding

Well only a handful of kids will do this on their own, most succesful programs put in a offseason workout plan and do small group workouts a few times a week for those not playing other sports.
I do know that WW coach was contacted by at least one AAU program about the opportunity for their girls to work on their development this spring and summer if any were interested.

Woah, be careful...do let some folks here know you are using AAU to develop athletic skills. They may think you're skirting the rules and training the team off season.

bottom line is it takes work. when the coach lives an hour out of town, it is hard for them to be there day after day in the off season. when most of your athletes play 2 or more sports its hard to work on just that one much less all of them unless the whole school athletics program is well organized and strictly monitored/enforced. ww has issues it has never faced and it remains to be seen if the board, admin & ad can work there magic and get this school headed back in the right direction.

Naw, having players with a good AAU program is a legit way to develop especially if a coach doesnt have time to do it themselves. Now using AAU connections as a way to recruit and funnel players to your school is another story.
The primary ways teams skirt the rules...
1. PE Class - (GHSA & GISA Schools) They create a PE class, may even call it Basketball, Basketball Basics or Team Sports. Ideally its put as the last class of the day so it can be sold to the administration as when they have to leave school early for away games, they will only be missing PE class not a academic class. They put the entire team into the class. Anyway keep the class year round so before and after the season you can work on skills, or you can do live practice situations. Rules only permit you can workout with a max of 4 varsity players the wording was changed to 4 high school players (GISA may have changed recently) in the gym for 1 coach. 4 on 1's is what its called. However since this is a class and a grade is given, everyone participates.
2. No rules for middle school (This may be more GHSA not sure how GISA applies this anymore since middle school players can play varsity.) You can only have 4 HS players in a offseason workout. The goal of this is to keep teams from having 5 players and working on plays and defense in August and geting a headstart on everyone else when practice starts in October. However since GHSA doesnt govern middle school, coaches have the 4 HS players come in and then invite in 1 or more middle school players, and now you can go over plays with 5 players, and you break no rules. Hence the reason it was changed from varsity players to high school because some coaches would have 4 varsity players and then all of their prior year jv or 9th grade players some who will probably be varsity that season coming in and basically practicing. So it was changed to all high school players. Some teams instead of middle school players will have a manager step in so they have 5 players.

WW boys are in track/baseball/tennis/golf mode. any basketball training is taking away from play those sports in season that sounds good but it wouldn’t hurt to shoot on weekends or after track practice. What else does a 16 year old kid do on a weekend besides eat chips and play video games

What else does a 16 year old kid do on a weekend besides eat chips and play video games That's it you find the time. When we had two sport athletes. Some we would have some come in before school 6:30am to get in a 45 minute or hour workout, at least two days a week. Others would come in after track practice or whatever and get in a work out. Of course you'd have to have a coach or coaches willing to run the workouts and player buy in. Players have to want to get better individually or want to get better because as a team they want to win more, etc... The best years is when we had a player of players that would come in on their own turn on the shooting machine and put up shots for 30min to a hour.
