Fair warning, the environment at Rome High is TOXIC right now. All of the RHS administrators are leaving, the Superintendent has NO prior experience in education and is overruling the BOE, and the BOE are all on hot seats for his decisions. Further, as a coach, you have to submit to the HFC and be approved and sign a separate contract to be a coach along with your teaching contract. More info on the situation below:

Most places, the BOE hires the Superintendent, and they can fire their ass too.

I believe what he is saying is that it is a Bert and Ernie show! Just ask the Administration who has moved on.

Just so people know the facts. Be informed and be cautious of where you get your information.
It was reported by a biased news source that Rome City Schools had 16 vacancies and that we are having a mass exodus of talented teachers and coaches due to new superintendent and Athletic Director hires . Let's look at those openings
Posted on Teach Ga are : 3 jobs elementary -no coaches 5 jobs middle school- no coaches
1 system speech language pathologist that has been open for at least a year and not filled.
2 Assistant Principals at the high school 1 teacher is retiring after 30+ years (not because of anything else) 1 retired in the Fall because of health reasons
1 Counselor position -(unrelated to athletics or new superintendent)
Only 3 vacancies at the high school 1-English teacher(coach) 2-US History teachers (both coaches one fired and one resigned)
So where is the mass exodus of talent ? We have 20 head coaches of sports and only 3 leaving. Is that an unheard of mass exodus. No we had 5 coaches leave 3 years ago when Franco was fired. Oh and this news source is sponsored by Darlington School. So you tell me why they are trying to bash the city school system.

New Superintendent New Principal New Middle School Principal 3 new Assistant Principals (1 left in October) New Baseball Coach New Athletic Director (current HC) New Cheer Coach New Girls Basketball Coach (check her record at RHS!) New Wrestling Coach Obviously
How's my Math? I am sure some jobs haven't made it to TeachGa and some have been filled. Want to bet there's more news coming?
Also hearing the Newly appointed Principal has not even resigned from Tift.

I live in Rome, graduated from there 10 years ago along with all my siblings, still have a brother in the system and a father who teaches there. All of my information comes from within the school and directly from the mouths of workers. Everyone is always going to be biased about any topic, which they are entitled to. From what I have heard, the Girls Soccer coach is being asked to step down as well. People are sacrificing quality and proven teachers who have all been with Rome longer than Reid, for teacher/coaches. That is all well and good but will turn sour fast if these new teacher/coaches do not perform in the classroom. The students who are not athletes at RHS have, and always will, outnumber the athletes.

One of the AP's, Gene Johnson, was replaced in the Spring but not retained. I am very well aware and closely following the situation. I graduated as a 3 sport letter-man of RHS and as an alumni, I only ever want great things for my alma mater, but by doing right by everyone, not just athletes. There's other kids at that school.

Roman here as well! And Milt Travis has now been forced out as the Head Boys Basketball Coach. I figured that one would happen to as he wasn't in a classroom. I respect that Holland, the incoming principal, is a tremendous basketball coach on and off the court with his program, but I do not believe that a Principal should be the Head Coach of any sport. To me it seems as if its a conflict of interest. However, he did an excellent job with the program at Tift Co. winning a state title and holding his players to an extremely high standard so if he can incorporate that into the every day operations of the school it could go fantastic for RHS.

Rome has underachieved in athletics for way to long. The new superintendent wants Rome to excel at the 3 A's which are academics, arts, and athletics. They have been great in academics and arts, but athletics have been neglected for years. Since the Old AD took over after Fritts left they have 0 State Championships and 0 Region championships in any sport. Old AD made it a good ole boy system and only gave raises to his friends and hired only his friends and buddies to coach. Rome has finished near the bottom in the Athletic Directors Cup, which is unacceptable at a city school. Just check to GHSA website to confirm that. The BOE and new superintendent wanted to make athletics a priority so they asked coach Reid to take them over. It would have been easier for coach to not take on all that. It was said that he decided to because it would be in the best interest of the school in the long run. So he took this project on and unfortunately some people do not like change. With anybody in a leadership position doing a great job, sometimes you are not going to be popular. I heard when coach got the job he met with all head coaches and told them his plan was to increase coaching pay, keep good coaches, hire good coaches when spots came open, improve facilities, make all head coaches involved in feeder programs, make sure all athletes are in year round strength and conditioning, set a minimum summer workout routine for all sports, and they would be judged on all this as well as wins and loses. Sounds to me some coaches didn't like that pressure and got out.
Oh and your girls basketball coach...well he is a guy and very passive and the girls ran all over him so he resigned. Middle School principal had been non compliant with certain hires for years and not cooperative with new superintendent about hiring teachers. Cheer coach that just resigned canceled competition cheer a few years ago and also had a JV Cheer squad that did not cheer at JV football games (mmm Lazy you think). She was told she would have her JV girls at JV Games and start back the competition cheer squad. Get what...she resigned (Oh and baseball coach is her husband) guess you got to back your wifes play. It is not 3 AP jobs one was never filled from 2 years ago, one is retiring which to me is not related to any administrative changes. Rome city schools will be fine and better once all the lazy folks get out and we hire hard working folks that will get backed 100% by the Superintendent, BOE, and the new AD.

Here's a question since all these coaches under perform. When Reid does not win Region and is eliminated in the 2nd round, does he get fired? Or forced to resign?

I don't think 2nd round exit should get someone fired. That would be the superintendent and Board of Educations call. What coach that has left/resigned/fired made it to the 2nd round?

I am not sure of current or past records for these coaches but I feel rather than "relieving them of their duties", it would be more helpful to his and Rome's rep to see what challenges they are facing as a program, create and implement a plan to overcome those difficulties and if the progress doesn't happen after that point, then move in a different direction. I know from conversations with current staff members/coaches, that isn't happening. Personally as a teacher and coach myself, I always am looking for a new perspective or outside help. As a coach, if you aren't learning, you're losing. While firing is a reality of e profession, no one deserves to be let go without knowing how they need to improve so that they may make adjustments and corrections to prevent the same outcomes.
